The Dispar Anthias, scientifically known as Pseudanthias dispar, is a colorful and popular marine fish species often kept in reef aquariums due to its striking appearance and vibrant colors. Here's a description of the Dispar Anthias:
Size: Dispar Anthias are relatively small fish. They typically reach a size of about 2.5 to 3 inches (6 to 7.5 centimeters) in length, with females being slightly smaller than males.
Coloration: These anthias are known for their dazzling and sexually dimorphic coloration. Males and females have distinct color patterns. Males are typically more vibrant, featuring a bright red to magenta body with a yellow stripe running along their dorsal fin and a prominent yellow spot near the base of the tail fin. Females, on the other hand, are generally pale orange with a thin yellow stripe along the back.
Body Shape: Dispar Anthias have an elongated and laterally compressed body shape, which is common among anthias species. They have a single dorsal fin that extends the length of their back and a forked tail fin.
Behavior: These anthias are known for their schooling behavior in the wild, where they form groups or harems consisting of one dominant male and several females. Males exhibit territorial and hierarchical behavior within these groups. In aquariums, they often display similar schooling behavior and are best kept in groups of multiple individuals.
Habitat: Dispar Anthias are native to the Indo-Pacific region, including the waters around the Great Barrier Reef, Indonesia, and other tropical areas. They are typically found in coral-rich reef environments, where they can seek shelter among coral formations.
Diet: In the wild, these anthias are omnivorous and primarily feed on zooplankton and small invertebrates. In captivity, they can be fed a varied diet that includes high-quality frozen or live foods, as well as small pellets or flakes designed for marine fish.
Aquarium Care: To keep Dispar Anthias in a home aquarium, it's essential to provide them with a well-maintained reef or marine aquarium with ample live rock for hiding and perching. These fish appreciate open swimming areas and prefer tanks with stable water conditions, including appropriate lighting and water quality.
Compatibility: Dispar Anthias are generally peaceful fish but can be territorial within their own species or towards similar-shaped species. It's advisable to keep them in larger tanks with plenty of hiding spots and to introduce them to the aquarium at the same time to reduce aggression. They are compatible with a variety of other reef-safe fish species.
